Chertoff says homeless will be put in rentals
No Katrina-style trailers will shelter the thousands of people left homeless this week, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday.During a conference call with North County Times editors and reporters, Chertoff said displaced residents will work with federal, state and local housing authorities to find temporary homes.

"I don't envision we will be using trailers," Chertoff said. "We will try to put people up in rental housing."

The American Red Cross, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development and local agencies are forming a task force for those with no place to live, Chertoff said.Oceanside Realtor Kurt Kinsey later said putting the displaced in rentals will drastically reduce the number of available apartments and houses in North County.Chertoff said that more than 100 Federal Emergency Management Agency workers are in place throughout San Diego County and will be here as long as it takes to process grants and loans from the federal government."We are beginning the process of getting people into the recovery mode," said Chertoff, who was in California on Monday and Tuesday before returning to Washington on Wednesday.
